It is all coming together now.
Seems the original plan for the phase 1 expansion entailed having a 250,000 sqm container yard as shown in the sketch below.
Due to higher than anticipated demand they’ve decided to increase the capacity of the yard by another 135,000 sqm making a total of 385,000 sqm. They will do this by filling and utilising the space between the STS cranes and yard.
Dredging and filling work has begun.
Berbera Port has good space available to it for future expansions. It is really a bonus.
I think they should not develop the natural break water strip known as Ra’aska Berbera as another shipping yard. That area is extremely useful for tourism resort development and high end luxury villas. It is got access to beach on both fronts. It needs to be carefully designed with public amenities included not just all privatised.
