This used to be where people take iconic Hargeisa photos, it looks like it’s being developed (not another hotel). Would have been good to build podium with seating heck even charge an entrance fee until the outlay is recouped by the municipality!
What a shame! This video shows the new structure
New Waaheen Market has given the city center a modern city look. Can’t wait to see it completed with paved roads, lights and trees.
Am curious whats gonna rise out of that police line plot! It’s huge.
Eventually we gonna have to move away from corrugated tin roofs in the CBD at the very least.
This interview explains things from the municipalities side (before the presidential decree)
Lack of awareness raising mixed with the usual shenanigans namely the usual suspects (social/media and politicians) playing the tribal card. Dowlada hoose should have done it in phases. You cannot just uproot market stalls that have been there for decades without giving them an alternative space or minimising disruption to their business. They literally just demolished the whole site which is more than is needed for the district building (I don’t understand why they don’t use the rectangular building which has been derelict for decades). Why not build the district building first, then update the market at a later time. These are sensitive times especially both economically (loss of waaheen) and politically (elections). Surely this could have been handled internally as well.
Lack of proper zoning which is what Mooge and his time are trying to tackle doesn’t help. That market space is home to fruit and veg sellers, animals being sold, car scrap yard etc.
Absolutely wrong. They should learn a lesson from this and start consultations and doing things methodoligically rather than spontaneously
