Saylada Xoolaha ee Magalada Burco (livestock market)

Burco Livestock market is one of the oldest markets in Africa of its kind. The market is as it was found back in 1890s. Nothing changed.

What a shame.

This market probably one of the most important in Somaliland. There has been no investments done over those many years.

If the Gov’t only invested in the following:

  1. proper managed livestock market which is fenced and has cages/xerooyin.
  2. Temporary shades for people and seating area
  3. Temporary accommodation for livestock owners who travel to the city.
  4. Gov’t offices for animal health checks/taxation and registration/documentation

Truly bewildering. Yemini trader? You can not make this up if you tried.

I am wondering why the Somaliland government has kept a low profile in the face of this? The livestock export is probably the second biggest income generator after Remitence.
