Mogadishu (HOL) - Somali Health Ministry and the British Embassy signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Monday for a health project to enhance maternal and child health services.

UNICEF will implement the Better Lives project in the Jubaland, Galmudug, and Banadir regional states. The agreement was signed by Dr. Ali Haji Adan, the Minister of Health and Social Welfare of Somalia, and Lottie Burrows, the acting British Ambassador to Somalia.

“This agreement will provide funding for the Better Lives project, which seeks to improve access to quality maternal and child health services in Somalia,” the minister said.

Ministry of Health stated that the signing of the MoU marks a significant step towards improving maternal and child health in Somalia and is expected to help save lives and enhance the health of mothers and children.

UNICEF appreciated the Ministry of Heath’s significant progress in the Essential Package of Health Services. It also thanked the UK government for supporting the Somali health sector as a key donor.

UNICEF further tweeted that the MoU sets the framework for collaboration on the next phase of bilateral UK support, in partnership with the Ministry, to strengthen the health sector.

“UNICEF is committed to ensuring that the “Better Lives” program delivers on the Essential Package of Health Services.”

Dr. Ali Haji Adan thanked the UK government for supporting the project. At the same time, Lottie Burrows stated that the agreement is crucial for Somalia’s health system and will play a vital role in the Ministry’s efforts to enhance the country’s health services.
